OUR HISTORY (AND STORY) IN BRIEF
Picton Baptist Church (PBC) started as an independent, evangelical house group formed in Picton on 4 March 1979. It was known as The Sunday Morning Fellowship, with about 20 people meeting regularly. After a year it was voted unanimously to approach the Blenheim Baptist Church to assist in an application to become a Baptist fellowship. Considerable help was given in expertise and finance. In faith, the AOG hall in Auckland Street was rented and after several part-time Pastors, the fellowship had grown to the extent that a house was purchased in Nelson Square and then modified for Church use. Years of growth and a very good offer on the land and building made possible the building of a Church in Waikawa on March 1986. The official opening of the Church at its current location of 293 Waikawa Road was on 5 August 1989. By the grace of God, PBC continues as a thriving fellowship of Christians committed to God's mission of restoring the world back to Himself through Christ.
OUR MISSION AND VISION
We're here to see lives transformed by Jesus, meeting Him and becoming like Him.
We proclaim the gospel of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, through whom people experience salvation, and to lead those who believe into membership of the church.
We encourage believers to assemble regularly for the public worship of God.
We are a loving and caring community of redeemed people who seek to live by Kingdom principles, and to move out beyond this to community to extend the Kingdom of God.
We promote brotherly and sisterly love among believers and goodwill towards all people.
We proclaim the Lordship of Christ over all creation, and seek to fulfil His mission locally, nationally, and internationally.
We recognise the Holy Spirit's bestowal of gifts upon believers for the sake of the ministry and the building of the church.
We seek to teach everyone the Word of God and its implications for daily living.
WHAT WE BELIEVE
We believe in one God, Creator of all things, holy, infinitely perfect, and eternally existing in a loving unity of three equally divine Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Having limitless knowledge and sovereign power, God has graciously purposed from eternity to redeem a people for Himself and to make all things new for His own glory.
We believe that God has spoken in the Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, through the words of human authors. As the verbally inspired Word of God, the Bible is without error in the original writings, the complete revelation of His will for salvation, and the ultimate authority by which every realm of human knowledge and endeavour should be judged. Therefore, it is to be believed in all that it teaches, obeyed in all that it requires, and trusted in all that it promises.
THE HUMAN CONDITION
We believe that God created Adam and Eve in His image, but they sinned when tempted by Satan. In union with Adam, human beings are sinners by nature and by choice, alienated from God, and under His wrath. Only through God’s saving work in Jesus Christ can we be rescued, reconciled, and renewed.
We believe that Jesus Christ is God incarnate, fully God and fully man, one Person in two natures. Jesus—Israel’s promised Messiah—was conceived through the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He lived a sinless life, was crucified under Pontius Pilate, arose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father as our High Priest and Advocate.
THE WORK OF CHRIST
We believe that Jesus Christ, as our representative and substitute, shed His blood on the cross as the perfect, all-sufficient sacrifice for our sins. His atoning death and victorious resurrection constitute the only ground for salvation.
THE HOLY SPIRIT
We believe that the Holy Spirit, in all that He does, glorifies the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of its guilt. He regenerates sinners, and in Him they are baptized into union with Christ and adopted as heirs in the family of God. He also indwells, illuminates, guides, equips and empowers believers for Christ-like living and service.
We believe that the true church comprises all who have been justified by God’s grace through faith alone in Christ alone. They are united by the Holy Spirit in the body of Christ, of which He is the head. The true church is manifest in local churches, whose membership should be composed only of believers. The Lord Jesus mandated two ordinances, baptism and the Lord’s Supper, which visibly and tangibly express the gospel. Though they are not the means of salvation, when celebrated by the church in genuine faith, these ordinances confirm and nourish the believer.
We believe that God’s justifying grace must not be separated from His sanctifying power and purpose. God commands us to love Him supremely and others sacrificially, and to live out our faith with care for one another, compassion toward the poor and justice for the oppressed. With God’s Word, the Spirit’s power, and fervent prayers in Christ’s name, we are to combat the spiritual forces of evil. In obedience to Christ’s commission, we are to make disciples among all people, always bearing witness to the gospel in word and deed.
We believe in a personal and bodily return of the Lord Jesus Christ. The second coming of Christ, at a time known only to God, demands constant expectancy and, as our blessed hope, motivates the believer to godly living, sacrificial service and energetic mission.
RESPONSE AND ETERNAL DESTINY
We believe that God commands everyone everywhere to believe the gospel by turning to Him in repentance and receiving the Lord Jesus Christ. We believe that God will raise the dead bodily and judge the world, assigning the unbeliever to condemnation and eternal conscious punishment and the believer to eternal blessedness and joy with the Lord in the new heaven and the new earth, to the praise of His glorious grace. Amen.
WHAT WE VALUE
The following is who we are beneath the surface, what drives us, and what distinguishes us as a church; they’re the values we’ve held for years, and will continue to define our future.
Jesus is Lord
As individuals, as families, and as a church, we will never retreat from this highest value. We only believe and teach what the Scriptures teach, and we go where the Spirit of God leads us.
We Evangelise the World
We are commissioned by Jesus to be His witnesses locally and around the world. Each individual is responsible to share their faith with those in their circle of relationships, and we corporately witness through strategic events and by sending out missionaries and church-planting teams from our body.
We Worship God Together
Through relevant, corporate worship we enjoy the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we praise the majesty of the Father, and listen to hear the heart of Jesus more clearly.
Every Member is a Minister
Ministry is done not only by staff or Pastors, but also by the members. Every believer has been uniquely gifted, empowered, and commissioned by God to do the work of the ministry. Staff and senior leadership function to equip, encourage and care for our ministers.
Every Member Needs a Community
Authentic, spiritual community is critical for every member. Community is where we fulfil the biblical mandate to “instruct one another” (Colossians 3:16) and to “carry each other’s burdens” (Galatians 6:2).
We Care for those who are Hurting and Offer Healing
People have always come through the doors of Picton Baptist hurting, sick, hopeless, or messed up. When they come, they’re accepted, they sense hope, and find help and healing through Christ.
We Love the Poor and Afflicted and Offer Help
Jesus expects His church to care for the needs of the poor and afflicted. As each of us strives to meet the spiritual and practical needs of those in our world, we’re not just obeying Christ, we’re also making His love and character known.
Every Member is Growing
A commitment to Jesus is not the end of our spiritual growth, it’s the beginning. Every believer strives to grow in intimacy with Jesus, and to increasingly surrender each part of his/her life to God.
